each arc is colored by how many legal moves pi could choose from at that moment — warm = wild & open (dozens of choices), cool = forced by fate (almost none). the bar on the left is the key.
classical rules lets the game end in draws, like human chess. no mercy switches those rules off — pi plays until checkmate or until only two bare kings remain.
